What is a Loan Note?
In the most basic sense, a loan note is simply an extended form of a generic I Owe You (IOU) document from one party to another. It enables a borrower to receive payments from a lender, usually with an interest rate attached. The Loan Note is scheduled to run over a set period of time and ends on the date at which the entire loan is to be repaid.
So what is a Loan Note for investors? Traditionally an individual who needs cash might turn to a bank or similar institution for a loan. This arrangement is turned around when it comes to private investors who become the lender to an organisation in need of funds.
It is easiest to understand the concept of investing via a Loan Note by looking at a common example – such as a Property Bond. In this scenario, the property developer is the borrower and the private investor is the lender. The cash which is borrowed is used for a specific purpose by the developer with the development forming part of the assurances around the loan.
Property remains one of the most popular forms of investing for consumers, given the returns available in the UK market. As such Property Bonds are one of the most attractive options for gaining access to that sector, without requiring any expert knowledge of construction or land development.
There are many other types of Loan Notes which are available and utilised by private investors across the UK every single day.
What is innovative ISA?
The innovative finance ISA is one of a number of different types of ISA available to savers. The other broad categories being cash, stocks & shares, and the subcategory of Lifetime ISA.
Rather than cash or equities, the innovative finance ISA allows tax-free investment in an asset called peer-to-peer (P2P) loans. This means that any interest earned within this wrapper will not be taxed and will not count towards your Personal Savings Allowance. What’s more you can also transfer existing ISAs funds into an IFISA.
What are P2P loans?
P2P stands for Peer-to-peer lending, it is the practice of lending money to individuals or businesses. P2P lending has become popular in recent years as a way for savers to earn more interest than they can from low-interest cash accounts.
What is renewable energy investment?
In order to understand renewable energy investments, it is useful to begin by understanding what renewable energy is.
A renewable energy source refers to energy that is sustainable – meaning that it is endless. Often referred to as clean energy, it comes from natural sources that do not involve the burning of fossil fuels. Obvious examples include solar (sunlight), wind and tidal energy. While renewable energy is often thought of as a new technology, harnessing nature’s power has long been used for heating, transportation, lighting, and more.
So what about renewable energy investments? An increased focus around the globe on cutting Co2 emissions and the availability of government subsidies means that the industry around renewable energy is scaling up rapidly. This growth, in both the private and public sector, is creating investment opportunities for environmentally focused investors as well as those looking for a future proof investment.
